HKS HIPERMAX Touring Adjustable Spring Kit for the FL5 Civic Type R

If you like the way your FL5 rides but you want it sitting lower and you want real camber adjustment up front, this is the kit that gets you there without throwing away Honda's adaptive dampers. The HIPERMAX Touring keeps your factory shocks, which means the drive mode switching keeps working exactly like it does now. You just get a better stance and actual adjustability on top of it.

That's kind of the whole point. Most people going to coilovers on an FL5 are giving up the electronically controlled dampers to get ride height, and plenty of them miss it on the daily drive. HKS built this to sit between a basic lowering spring and a full coilover conversion.

You keep the OEM adaptive dampers

The factory shock absorbers stay in the car. The OEM electronically controlled suspension and the factory mode switching stay fully functional. Nothing gets defeated and you don't need a canceller kit.

Adjustable pillow ball front upper mounts

The front suspension gets HKS adjustable pillow ball upper mounts in place of the stock rubber mounted arrangement. That's a more direct connection between the suspension and the chassis, so steering response sharpens up.

More useful day to day, those mounts give you front camber adjustment. That's what you want if you're running wider tires, a more aggressive wheel fitment, or you just want a proper performance alignment instead of whatever the factory gave you.

Three front ride heights, threaded rear

HKS skipped a conventional spring height adjuster up front on purpose. You get a spacer system with three preset positions instead, which keeps enough suspension stroke for the car to still work properly.

  • Raised setting: about 13mm lower than stock
  • HKS recommended and test setting: about 19mm lower than stock
  • Lowered setting: about 25mm lower than stock

The rear uses a threaded ride height assembly, so you can dial the back of the car in more precisely within its range.

Spring rates that don't wreck the ride

Rather than going stiff for the sake of it, HKS tested repeatedly and landed on rates that stay close to the factory character. They also deliberately use the OEM bump stops as part of how the suspension behaves. The result is less body movement without beating you up on a normal road.

Front Spring Rate 51 N/mm (5.2 kgf/mm)
Rear Spring Rate 52 N/mm (5.3 kgf/mm)

The honest bottom line

If your FL5 is a street car or a canyon car and you actually like what the adaptive dampers do, this is the smart move. About 19mm down with front camber adjustment covers what most owners are really after. If you're chasing lap times, running slicks, or you want a big drop, don't buy this one. Go to a full coilover like the HIPERMAX R instead. Different kit, different job.

Ride height figures come from HKS test data and will vary with your car, how it's assembled, and your wheel and tire setup. Some settings can cause interference or may not meet local vehicle requirements, so check your clearance after install and get the car aligned.
