The GR86 is a back-to-basics sports car that is hugely fun to drive, but its intake leaves room for improvement: the induction sound is largely artificial and piped through the speakers, the airbox is small with Helmholtz resonators that quieten induction, and there is a distinct hesitation at low rpm. Infinity Design's goal was a full redesign for faster throttle response, improved torque under partial and full load, and far more genuine induction sound — the least powerful car the company has developed for, but the most rewarding.

Development Process

Multiple prototypes were built. An early version with an additional small secondary feed showed no power gain and a new torque dip, with CFD revealing turbulence ahead of the filter. The final design keeps a single direct feed but doubles the cross-sectional area of the front inlet, extends the snorkel forward with a bell mouth to smooth airflow, and uses a much larger filter housing with the largest possible venturi inlet tube. CFD then showed less turbulence than OEM with vastly increased airflow.

Performance Testing

Dyno tests were performed under strict controlled conditions on an independent Maha MSR500 dynamometer. The stock car made 228 bhp and 179 lb-ft; after fitting the intake it produced 239 bhp and 184 lb-ft — clear gains of 11 bhp and 5 lb-ft peak. A 10 lb-ft torque gain was seen from 2,000–3,000 rpm, with significant power and torque gains from 6,000 rpm to redline. Independent tests by Driven Media and Tegiwa returned strongly positive results.
