RV6's main goal with the R660 RED was to develop a robust and reliable turbocharger. The first step was ditching the stock-sized TD04 format. The TD04 design is popular among OE turbochargers for its small, compact size and quick response, but reliably squeezing more than 400HP from such a small turbo is difficult and comes at the cost of shortened life. To achieve its goals, RV6 needed to over-build and upsize everything.

The R660 is built around a TD05 bearing housing — about twice the size of the TD04 — which allows the use of a full-sized 8mm ceramic ball bearing for quick spool and increased thrust loads. To keep everything cool and reliable, the coolant passages are oversized and fed by -10AN coolant lines.

The larger TD05 bearing housing allowed a turbine housing with an A/R of 0.81, significantly reducing back pressure between the turbo and engine and solving many issues with unstable boost and overheating. The FEA-optimized compressor wheel is a lightweight point-milled forged billet design, and a MAR-M super-alloy turbine wheel and shaft tolerate higher temperatures and loads than typical Inconel parts.

Requires an FK8 wastegate actuator. Backed by a 1-year warranty. Operating an RV6 turbocharger requires a minimum engine oil viscosity of 0W-30 or 5W-30; this is a strict requirement and not optional, and RV6 reserves the right to deny warranty claims for failures caused by non-compliant oil grades.
